Geopolitical Award
Through this prize, the FMES wishes to encourage research and analysis related to geopolitics and the study of current conflicts. The works selected must combine relevance, quality of writing and a cross-section of views on contemporary world issues.
Terms of participation
To take part in the 2025 edition, send 3 copies of the selected work before 01/07.
- Maison de l'innovation et du numérique, Pl Georges Pompidou - 83000, Toulon
The work must be printed and published by a French-language publishing house.
Publication date must be after October 2024 (no reprints).
The work must deal with international relations or contemporary geopolitics.

Lessons from the Syrian crisis
The lessons learned from the analysis of the Syrian conflict are indispensable for understanding the new confrontation between the West and the Eurasian axis, the impact of global warming, immigration as a weapon of war and the dysfunctional analysis and decision-making process in France. The fact that our diplomacy, the world of research and many experts have been completely wrong about the outcome of the Syrian crisis should make us question our vision of the world.
The conference
The FMES Institute, in partnership with the University of Toulon, was privileged to welcome Fabrice Balanche, winner of the FMES 2024 Geopolitical Award for his book “Lessons from the Syrian crisis”, as part of the 2024/2025 monthly lecture series.

La conférence
Jean-Pierre Filiu, professeur en histoire du Moyen-Orient contemporain à SciencesPo, analyse dans cette conférence organisée par la FMES en partenariat avec l’Université de Toulon la genèse du conflit israélo-palestinien et son évolution jusqu’aux évènements du 7 octobre. Le lauréat du Prix FMES Géopolitique partage en outre sa vision d’une sortie politique au conflit, matérialisée par l’application d’une solution à deux Etats ; à la fois symbole d’une « victoire politique israélienne » et permettant dans le même temps l’exercice d’une souveraineté palestinienne sur un territoire aux frontières redéfinies.
