Deep-sea mining is part of the EU`s Blue Growth strategy under the thematic area of marine mineral resources. Deep-sea mining is part of the wider activity of marine mining which also includes mining of aggregates and other materials such phosphates, tin, diamonds and tin in shallower waters. Deep-sea mining has become particularly important in recent years as, after many decades of research and interest into seabed mineral reserves, technological developments have allowed us to exploit previously unreachable deposits and increasing demand and resulting price increases in combination with a scarcity of some materials have triggered a renewed attention for the possibilities of exploiting deep sea resources.
